The Future of Micropayments with Hedera Hashgraph
To conclude the morning keynote presentations, Patrick Harding, SVP of Product at Hedera Hashgraph, and Jon West, VP of Blockchain Engineering at Thomson Reuters, will take the stage to discuss the future of cryptocurrency micropayments, and the tax and accounting requirements to be expected.
Patrick will present a brief history of micropayments and how we got to where we are today. He’ll present a live demonstration of in-browser micropayments, using an open source decentralized application and wallet extension built on Hedera Hashgraph. The micropayments dapp was created as a developer example to demonstrate the fundamentals of building a dapp on Hedera Hashgraph, while showcasing the speed and efficiency of Hedera cryptocurrency transactions which enable practical micropayments.
Jon will be discussing how cryptocurrency micropayments will be treated as taxable events, and accounting for them becomes a business requirement. He’ll explain potential ways businesses might treat distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) in relation to traditional ERP software, and how DLTs will revolutionize financial business dealings globally. Jon will conclude his presentation with a real-world example of utilizing DLTs and cryptocurrency micropayments for government tax remittance purposes, leading to reduced costs and improved efficiency for both businesses and governments.

Hedera API: Cryptocurrency 101
Hedera Cryptocurrency is a Hedera Hashgraph platform service that allows decentralized application developers to pay for services on the Hedera public network. With the Hedera API, developers can pay node fees, service fees, and transaction fees required by their dapp, as well as incorporate the Hedera cryptocurrency into their dapp. Due to expert efficiency and low fees, Hedera Hashgraph is the first DLT to make cryptocurrency microtransactions practical. In this session, Craig Drabik, Technical Lead at TxMQ, Inc., will take a deep dive into the Hedera API from a cryptocurrency perspective, conduct live API demonstrations, and talk real-world use cases.

Managing Energy Microgrids using Decentralised Structured Databases
Guard Global Ltd has developed a system to manage renewable energy microgrids by harnessing the power of Hedera Hashgraph DLT. The core of the system is a decentralised structured database to manage trustless interactions among interconnected members, across multiple microgrid mesh-networks. We have shown how the gossip protocol is able to handle the high speeds and volumes of transactions to cater for the demands of prosumers and consumers of renewable energy. Our aim is to extend the microgrid network across borders, thus accurate reporting and governance is a key factor in our success. Our approach is to leverage our structured data reporting capabilities to seamlessly report to various regulators and compliance agencies, as well as the microgrid stakeholders. Peer-to-peer energy trading among members will be possible via cryptocurrencies and/or fiat currency gateways.

Carbon: Accessible, Stable Money
In developing markets, many people do not have access to a stable currency or even a bank account, but they may have mobile devices with internet connection. Carbon aims to facilitate a more inclusive and efficient global economy by launching reliable, price-stable cryptocurrencies that leverage Hedera Hashgraph’s high throughput and security.

CarbonUSD is a compliant, price-stable cryptocurrency that is one-to-one backed with USD. Starting off with full fiat-collateralization is essential for bootstrapping the market's trust in a stablecoin without depending on the size of an initial reserve. The team has developed a novel mechanism for transitioning to a hybrid fiat-algorithmic stablecoin model once CarbonUSD reaches sufficient scale as a fully fiat-backed token.

By deploying the algorithmic stablecoin on Hedera Hashgraph with Ethereum interoperability, CarbonUSD users will be able to tap into an advanced payments networks where transactions are borderless, have minimal fees, and are settled within seconds. Additionally, CarbonUSD serves as a gateway into the distributed ledger economy where users can trade and hedge against tokenized assets or interact with smart contract applications.

Most societies need stable, sound money to function effectively. CarbonUSD is an accessible alternative for developing economies, where adoption may catalyze the convergence towards a more inclusive and efficient global economy.

Hedera for Music Streaming Micropayments
The music industry has been a long tale of technological disruption. From records to CDs to Napster to iTunes to Spotify, the emergence of new technologies enabled new modes of distribution and new business models. One common theme has remained throughout: artists never get a fair shake. With the emergence of blockchain and distributed ledger technology, a lot of speculation has swirled around how smart contracts can increase transparency and efficiency of rights attribution. While this might help the existing music industry improve their status quo of paying artists minuscule amounts per stream over 2 years late, I believe most are missing the bigger picture. The incumbent music industry licensing frameworks are designed to take the majority of the streaming revenue before it reaches the artists, and distributed ledger technology enables new business models for the long tail of artists to go direct to fan and cut out the middlemen. Hedera Hashgraph is the first technology platform that will enable truly seamless global micropayments for music streaming which can be deployed on an app at scale. With the perfect trinity of high speed performance, mathematically sound consensus, and virtually no transaction fees, Hedera Hashgraph is lightyears ahead of its competitors in both hard technology and governance structures. The groundbreaking potential of hashgraph is to revolutionize the music industry and democratize music distribution by disrupting the existing industry juggernauts. The ripple effect will be profound and the power will lie back in the hands of the artists.

Deep Dive: Formal Methods
Dr. Leemon Baird will present an introduction to how mathematical proofs can be checked by a computer, and how this can be useful in projects where security and correctness is important. These formal methods can increase our confidence that a consensus algorithm is truly Asynchronous Byzantine Fault Tolerant (aBFT), or that a given program correctly implements that algorithm. Examples will be shown from the proofs that have been developed for the Hashgraph consensus algorithm, using the Coq Proof Assistant.

Demystifying Distributed Ledgers
According to the dictionary, a myth is either a:
  1. Traditional story of ostensibly historical events.
  2. A widely held but false belief or idea.

The distributed ledger space has both, and in this session I'll be focusing on the second interpretation— presenting a verity of myths about distributed ledger technologies. These ideas are often accepted as canonical fact, without justification, and today we will be demystifying them.
